Pianist, educator, examiner, composer, arranger and vocalist, Jenni Flemming has forged a career in Australia as a multi-genre musician. Jenni began playing by ear at the age of 4, studying and composing music from the age of 6, and commencing tertiary studies age 15. Her teachers include Pamela Page and Max Olding with whom she studied as a child, an undergraduate and as a Master of Music recipient. Jenni won many scholarships and competitions, including the National Finals of the ABC Concerto competition, leading to overseas study with esteemed piano pedagogues, Hungarian Bela Siki in Seattle, and Kendal Taylor in London.
Jenni enjoys a wide range of performance experiences from Classical and Jazz to improvisation. Her passion for collaborative music-making has been a major focus of her career. Jenni is the founder and Artistic Director of the Australian Piano Duo Festival, now in it’s 14th year, bringing together many of Australia’s finest pianists in performances of the duo piano genre. She regularly presents the Young Conservatorium piano students in duet performances in the Lord Mayor’s Brisbane City Hall Lunchtime concert series.
Significant collaborations throughout her career have been with husband, cellist Gwyn Roberts, duo piano partner Brachi Tilles, Ensemble I, and the Queensland Piano Trio with whom she has performed throughout Australia, Scandinavia, South East Asia, USA and the United Kingdom.
Jenni has taught Piano, Pedagogy and Aural at the Queensland Conservatorium and the University of Queensland School of Music. She is a Federal examiner for the Australian Music Examinations Board and is a teacher and co-ordinator of the Senior Piano Program at the Open Conservatorium, Griffith University, guiding students through Master-classes, recitals and examinations. Through her teaching philosophy Jenni aims to share her deep love of music, building a student’s confidence as a musician and instilling an understanding and respect of a wide range of musical styles.
She holds a Bachelor of Music from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, a Master of Music from the University of Queensland, and studied classical piano at the University of Seattle and in London. On returning to Australia, Jenni established a career in both classical and contemporary music, performing and recording a subscription series for ABC Radio with Contemporary music group Perihelion. She was a music producer at 4MBS Radio station in the early 1980’s.
Her classical career includes performances as both soloist and orchestral player with the Melbourne, Queensland, Canberra and Adelaide Symphony Orchestras, the Hobart Chamber Orchestra, Barrier Reef Orchestra and the Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra, and recording for the ABC as a classical artist.
Together with husband Gwyn, Jenni co-directs the Huon Valley Music Collective, a Chamber Music and Jazz Festival based in Cygnet, Tasmania. Jenni has recently performed at the Brisbane Jazz Club as singer/pianist.
Her passion for painting, ceramic and mosaic art continues to flourish and in 2022 she published her childhood music compositions along with her paintings depicting the compositions. The book “My Mother, My Muse” was dedicated to her mother, who taught her to sing, and encouraged her life-long dedication to music.
